Mother’s Day Roses: Mother’s Day is a fabulous day when celebrations are made across the globe to honor the mothers. It is observed on various days in the months of March or May in different countries across the globe, but in the United States it is celebrated on the second Sunday in the month of May.
Mother’s Day is usually celebrated by presenting a flower bouquet along with a greeting card and some other gift to your mom followed by a lunch or a candle-lit dinner with her at home or in a restaurant with soft music and candle lights which create a wonderful ambiance. A few days prior to Mother’s Day the sale of flowers, gifts and greeting cards reaches the sky and the concerned shops have a roaring business.
Though all kind of flowers are presented to the moms on Mother’s Day, but the roses are the most popular flowers because rose is considered a symbol of love. It will not be out of place to share with the readers a quotation of Emma Goldman (1869-1940), a Russian-American political activist and writer, about the significance of roses; “I’d rather have roses on my table than diamonds on my neck”.
It will be interesting to learn that rose is the official state flower of three US States; Georgia, New York and Oklahoma. ‘Cherokee Rose’ (Rosa laevigata), a beautiful white rose, was officially designated in 1916 as the state flower of Georgia. Rose became the state flower of New York in 1955. ‘Oklahoma Rose’ (Rosa Oklahoma), a dark red rose, was developed at Oklahoma State University by Herbert C. Swim and O. L. Weeks in 1963, but it was officially introduced in 1964. It was named the state flower of Oklahoma in 2004.
Different colors of roses are selected for moms (and for mothers-in-law too) which include red, yellow, pink, purple, white, etc. By far the choice of selection of red roses exceeds all other colors. Each color of rose signifies a different passion and conveys a different message. Before choosing the color of roses for one’s mom on this year’s Mother’s Day, it is important that one should have a knowledge about the significance of each color.
Roses of Different Colors
